Building Relationships with your Local Politicians
Following on from the previous article about Fair Funding, in the lead up to both the state and Federal Elections in 2025, we can not stress enough the importance of inviting your local members along to your schools to meet with your parent community. This provides a great opportunity to show them the fantastic work you are doing, and to talk to them about the unique needs of your school community. We know that some schools enjoy very positive relationships with their local members already, however we encourage you all to do so. Building a strong relationship with your local representatives can lead to them taking a personal interest in your school and the parents within your community, which in turn makes them more likely to advocate on your behalf with the government or local council.
CSPWA have developed a resource for tips on how to build relationships with your Government Representatives, from how and when to invite them, how to prepare for your meeting, and what to do after the meeting to keep the conversation and relationship going. To access the resource, please click here.
We have also developed a draft template letter which you can use as a guide when writing to your local members. To view this letter, please click here. For an editable version of this letter, which can be modified to suit your local school context, please contact our office on support@csp.wa.edu.au.
We also encourage you to becoming familiar with Catholic Education WA's (CEWA) Fair Funding Campaign so we as parents can be a united voice when speaking to the Politician's in our community. CEWA is "calling on all political parties to put children first and acknowledge the contribution Catholic schools make to communities across Western Australia by ensuring a fairer funding deal for our students."
CEWA are advocating for 3 key funding priorities for our system, which will benefit you and your children. In summary, there are:
- $25m in ongoing State Government Capital Funding to ensure students in WA Catholic Schools have parity with other students across Australia.
- An additional one-off $100m over five years to address the legacy of capital underfunding for Catholic schools in the Kimberley.
- The State Government meets $2m cost for insurance and risk management in the Kimberley and collaborates with CEWA in cases of uninsured losses.
